News and Information

  • [February 2017] We are happy to announce our first Software Carpentry workshop in Freiburg in Freiburg on 9.-10.3.2017! The workshop is for beginners and will be about an introduction to UNIX (and Bash) in order to master Git (a version control system); and the programming language Python. Please contact Bérénice Batut if you are interested or have any questions.
  • [January 2017] The Galaxy team has set up bioinformatics infrastructure and services to support academics from all over Europe, free of charge and open access. The infrastructure provides computing power for researchers to analyse very large data sets, which are very common in modern molecular biology. This High-Performance Computing Center was initiated in 2015 and is funded by the Bundesmisterium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) with around 5.8 Million euro. It was first set up for use only within Germany but now has been extended to all of Europe. See the following press release in Englisch and in German. Please contact Björn Grüning if you are interested.
  • [February 2016] E-learning-Förderpreis (E-learning development grant). Our postdoc, Martin Mann, recently won a prize of 5000 EUR to convert our current bioinformatics courses for integration into the E-learning platform ILIAS of the University of Freiburg. Martin's vision is to change the current norm of frontal lectures where students listen to the lecturer for 90 minutes and then spend time afterwards learning the lecture content into online self-learning modules that are subsequently discussed in detail together with the lecturer at the regular meetings. He already started in SS2015 with RNA bioinformatics and other courses are sure to follow.
  • Abwehrsystem automatisch aufgeschlüsselt (press release in German). Together with many leading scientists researching the CRISPR-Cas immune systems in prokaryotes, we have published an updated review on the classification of these systems in Nature Reviews Microbiology. For the first time we are able to automatically assign these systems to the current classification model with a near-perfect accuracy.
